What is a parcel locker?
A parcel locker (or parcel pickup locker) is a cabinet of secured compartments in a public location, where a parcel can be dropped off and later collected without the two people ever meeting. The recipient gets a code or QR code and opens their compartment during the location’s opening hours. In Europe this is already a dominant delivery method: DHL has run Packstations since 2001 and InPost passed one billion parcels in 2024.
How do smart parcel lockers work?
In three steps. A parcel is placed in a free compartment — by a carrier, a merchant or an individual. The system sends the recipient a code or QR code. The recipient walks up, scans or types the code, and the compartment opens. No app is required, and no account is needed to collect a parcel.
Are there parcel lockers in Canada?
Yes, but in fragmented form: the existing networks are mostly closed, meaning they only accept parcels from one carrier or one retailer. There is not yet a public, open, carrier-agnostic network comparable to Germany's Packstations or InPost in Poland. That is exactly what MesColis is building in Canada.
What is the difference between an open and a closed locker network?
A closed network only accepts parcels from the company that runs it: handy if you always order from the same place, useless otherwise. An open network accepts any carrier and also serves peer-to-peer handoffs, returns and short-term compartment rental. It is the difference between one brand’s locker and genuine neighbourhood infrastructure.
Can I use a locker to sell on Marketplace or Kijiji?
Yes, and it is one of the uses Canada most lacks. The seller drops the item in a compartment and the buyer collects it with a code — no address exchanged, no meeting in a parking lot, no schedule to coordinate. It is safer for both sides, particularly when someone is selling from their home.
Can a business host or install a parcel locker?
Yes. A shop, building, campus or parking lot can host a MesColis locker: it drives foot traffic, gives customers and residents a service, and requires no day-to-day management. Terms are discussed case by case depending on location and traffic — the "become a partner" page explains how to start.
Do I need an app or an account to use a locker?
No. Collecting a parcel is done with a code or QR code, right at the touchscreen. Paying for a compartment rental happens on the spot — Interac Flash, card or mobile payment. Requiring no app is deliberate: an app requirement would exclude exactly the people a neighbourhood pickup point serves best.
